We did itOn November 19, 2017 by Mark Thomson
We did it. We completed all four major objectives, including Everest Base Camp and Cho La pass. We also exceeded the fundraising goal of $2000 –
Total raised = $2310
I can’t say enough about how happy and relieved I am to return safe and sound to Canada with these memories that will last a lifetime. I don’t think it has fully sunk in to be honest.
There are lots of things that can go wrong on a trek like this, but everything went smooth as (Yak) butter. That’s thanks to the general awesomeness (and great attitude) of trekking partner Leonard Fong and the extraordinary people over at Green Valley Nepal Treks. Particularly, our guide Sange Ghising, our porter, and owner Rajendra Lamichhane.
I can’t emphasize enough how critical to success a local guide and porter is to a trek like this. While the kindness and work ethic of Nepalis are legendary, the local knowledge and connections that these guys brought to the table cannot be emphasized enough.
Some stats from the trek –
- Distance hiked: 140km
- Highest point: 5,643m or 18,513′
- Days without a shower: 8
- Yak dung stepped in: twice
- Suspension bridges crossed: 7
- Bakeries encountered that claim to be the “World’s Highest”: 4
- Price of a Coke + Snickers near basecamp: $13*
*This is actually quite reasonable considering everything is flown to Lukla and then carried here by porter or yak over the course of 3-5 days!
I intend to write more when I have time. But for now the most important thing I want to do is say a big thank you to all supporters for getting behind the fundraising effort. What started out as a vague idea turned out to be a great success because of your generosity and kindness.
At the outset, I truly didn’t know what to expect…. the outcome of the fundraising effort was no less certain than the outcome of the trek itself. That was a little scary to be honest.
For the success on both fronts I am truly grateful and humbled.
Last but not least – I want to add an extra special thanks to these fine companies for their kind support…
